SkinPen Aftercare Instructions

Pre-Treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and excessive heat for at least one week prior to treatment. If sun exposure cannot be avoided, a sunscreen SPF 30 or greater should be worn as well as a hat. A sunscreen with UVA and UVB coverage provides best protection.
  • Notify your physician if you develop a cold sore or any other illness prior to the treatment
  • Purchase a non-allergenic water-based moisturizer for use in post-treatment care (per recommendation of medical professional) Examples: Neocutis, Skinceuticals, Avene Cicalfate, Silver Gel or cream
  • Pre-treatment prescriptions (such as oral antibiotics or antiviral medications) should be filled and initiated prior to treatment
  • Discontinue use of topical retinoids 24 hours prior to procedure.
  • Let your provider know if you are experiencing any active breakouts or open lesions on areas being treated.

Post-Treatment:

  • You should not drive yourself home if you have taken a sedative.
  • Despite the description of these treatments, you should not necessarily expect to “peel”. However, you may have light flaking for a few days. Most patients who undergo these treatments have only residual redness for anywhere from 1-12 hours.
  • It is recommended that you do not apply make-up the day of the treatment.
  • Your skin may feel warm, tight and “pulled”.
  • Apply aftercare such as Growth Factors (Neocutis), PRP, Cicalfate (Avene), Silver Gel or other topicals as directed by your provider.
  • Adding topical Vitamin C, anti-oxidants and Retin-A as part of a regular collagen induction program may improve skin by up to 150%
  • Although you may not “peel” it is likely that you will experience a light exfoliation.
  • Unless recommended by your provider, do not apply other medications, Retin-A, Retinol or alpha/beta hyrdoxy products, or any acids or abrasives to your skin, since they may be irritating.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat.
  • Do not pick at or pull on any loosening or exfoliating skin. This could potentially cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Absolutely do not go to the tanning booth for at least 72 hours after treatment.
  • Do not have electrolysis, collagen injections, and facial waxing, and do not use depilatories, for approximately 5 days.

Our office wants to provide you with the absolute best care.  You can help to minimize the risk of complications by carefully reading and following your preoperative and postoperative instructions.  Ask us to clarify any item about which you have questions.  This treatment allows for the controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanisms by creating micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers new collagen synthesis. Specifically, there is a three-phase wound-repair process:

Phase 1: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow, and create new tissue.

Phase 2: Proliferation. The wound is re-built with new granulation cells. Plus a new network of blood vessels develops.

Phase 3: Remodeling. New dermal tissues and blood vessels replace the wound.

The result is smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin. Collagen Induction Therapy Microneedling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile needle head. The procedure is normally completed within 30-60 minutes, depending on the required treatment, +/- anesthesia and the anatomical site.
