IPL Pre- and Post-Treatment Instructions

Our office wants to provide you with the absolute best care.  You can help to minimize the risk of complications by carefully reading and following your preoperative and postoperative instructions.  Ask us to clarify any item about which you have questions.

Pre- Treatment:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for four to six weeks prior to treatment.
  • Do not apply self-tanners or spray tans for four weeks prior to treatment.
  • If the skin is irritated from the use of exfoliants like Tretinoin, discontinue use for one week before treatment.
  • Depending on your skin type, a bleaching regimen may be started two to six weeks before treatment.
  • If you have history of fever blisters, please notify provider. A prescription may be given to start on the day of treatment to prevent a flare-up.
  • You must notify the technician if you have had any cosmetic tattooing on or near the area to be treated.
  • Any Photosensitizing medications including certain antibiotics like doxycycline and minocycline should be discontinued three days prior to treatment.

Post-Treatment:

  • The benefits of IPL skin rejuvenation will develop over a few weeks to a few months. It is suggested that IPL treatments be performed every 2-4 weeks. On average, 3-6 treatment sessions are needed to achieve the desired results.
  • Generally, a “sunburned” sensation on treatment areas is experienced for up to 24-48 hours.
  • Although your face may appear slightly pink and puffy after treatment, you may return to your daily activities without restriction. A soothing cream (e.g aloe, phyto corrective gel, or other hydrogels) may be helpful for any redness that is uncomfortable
  • The gradual darkening of pigmentation will occur. Patients are advised not to rub the treatment area or try to scrub the area away for couple days. This is part of the healing process and should start to slough off in three to four days.
  • It is REQUIRED to wear sunblock designated for the face rated as an SPF of 30 or higher, and that you avoid excess sun exposure for 30 days following treatment. If light spots occur, it is even more important to avoid sun exposure.
  • Combining treatments with a regimen of topical vitamin C, and Retin A (per provider instruction) can enhance results
  • If you experience prolonged pain, discoloration or any allergic responses or in the area please contact the office at 859-266-5483 or 859-266-0117 (after hours) if you have any questions or concerns.

Light can be used effectively to destroy targets located in the skin with minimum damage to the surrounding tissues. Light is used to lighten, fade or remove photo-damaged skin in a non-ablative manner—a procedure known as photo rejuvenation (IPL/BBL/photo-facial). Visible signs of photo damage include wrinkling, enlarged pores, coarse skin texture and pigment alterations. The purpose of the IPL procedure is to lighten, fade, or remove pigmentation spots, broken blood vessels, redness veins, or stretch marks. IPL also helps to improve facial aging, collagen production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduce pore size and provide increased skin tone. An appropriate wavelength of light for your skin condition is used to give you optimal results with the least inconvenience. A protective cooling gel is applied to the skin allowing the IPL to pass harmlessly through the upper layers of your skin and stimulate the cells deep below the surface to produce natural collagen. Light from IPL is an intense burst of light and, even though the special safety eyewear is in place, you may sense light emanating from the treatment area. The sensation of light may be uncomfortable in certain areas and feel like pinpricks or bursts of heat. The collagen and elastin fibers continue to multiply after the treatment over time. IPL treatment can be performed on most facial and body areas with minimal discomfort. A topical anesthetic cream can be used on the extremely sensitive areas, but is seldom needed. Benefits include younger-looking skin with almost immediate recovery and virtually no downtime. Treatments typically take 15-20 minutes and on average a package of 2-3 treatments are needed to stimulate new collagen growth. Multiple IPL treatments over time are required for optimal results. According to recent histological studies and clinical research, the results of IPL can be effective and long lasting in healthy individuals. The best results are obtained when the pigment in the “target” abnormalities (hair, blood vessels, pigment, etc.) contrasts greatly with the surrounding skin. It is recommended to do 2-4 maintenance treatments per year to sustain the continued collagen growth and treat any new or lingering sun damage. This treatment is unlike other resurfacing treatments as your skin is not subjected to chemicals or the intense superficial ablation caused by CO2 and/or erbium lasers.
