Dermal Filler Pre- and Post-Treatment Instructions

Our office wants to provide you with the absolute best care.  You can help to minimize the risk of complications by carefully reading and following your pre and post-treatment dermal filler instructions.  Ask us to clarify any item about which you have questions.  Fillers are used to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds or shape facial contours. A natural, youthful face is full, not tight. There are different types of fillers that may be used during your treatment:

1) Hyaluronic Acid and/or its derivatives with or without Lidocaine (such Belotero, Juvederm, Restylane, and others)

2) Calcium hydroxylapatite with or without Lidocaine (such as Radiesse).

Your injector will choose which type of filler is best for your area of concern and goals of treatment. Your planned treatment today includes injection of a filling substance for the improvement of the aging face or body for lipoatrophy and/or volume loss. Areas commonly treated include upper and lower lip, nasolabial folds, cheeks, crow’s feet, eyebrows, periorbital areas, temples, forehead, neck, décolleté, hands/body and/or other areas.

  • During the first 24–48 hours after treatment (and on occasion longer) you may experience redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas. These reactions are normal and resolve quickly and spontaneously over the next 3-5 days. You may apply light water-based or mineral makeup where necessary.  Bruising at the site of injection is possible and usually clears completely in 1-10 days, however persistent skin discoloration such as deep red/purple or white (blanching) of skin should be followed up immediately!  Also, it is not normal to experience PAIN after injections.  Persistent Pain requires immediate attention and follow-up.
  • Avoid touching the treated area within 6 hours so you do not accidentally injure your skin while the area is numb. Afterwards the area can be gently washed with soap & water. Your provider may advise massage to the areas gently with a greasy moisturizer 2-3x daily for 2-3 days. If any lumps occur, gently massage the areas with your fingers as indicated. If no lumps are visible, you do not need to massage the areas for a prolonged period.
  • Swelling and bruising can give the appearance of ‘unevenness’ in the area treated. This will settle once the swelling and bruising has gone.  If there is any ‘unevenness’ present after 14 days contact our office for advice. Very rarely a further ‘correctional’ treatment of temporary dermal filler is required.  Additional product and service costs will apply.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, hot drinks, spicy food, excessive exertion, sun, and sauna use for 24 hours, as these may exacerbate bruising and swelling.
  • Avoid medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDS, which are blood thinning agents and may exacerbate bruising, for 24 hours (if these medications have been advised by your GP please check with your GP before stopping them)
  • Avoid supplements such as multivitamins, fish oils, glucosamine and Vitamin B or Vitamin E, which are blood thinning agents and may exacerbate bruising for 24 hours
  • Cold compresses may be applied to the area injected for up to 6 hours after the treatment. This will prevent or help to alleviate any bruising and reduce swelling.  Arnica cream and/or tablets may be dispensed to help alleviate any bruising.  NOTE:  bruising can last 1-10 days.  Bruises are TEMPORARY and will completely disappear over time with no effect on your treatment. Once bruising has formed (within the first 48 hours) it is better to apply warmth to the area to encourage the body’s natural re-absorption of the bruise from the skin.  Re-application of Arnica cream may also be beneficial.
  • If you have suffered in the past with cold sores on the skin or lips, please advise your cosmetic practitioner prior to treatment, as this viral infection may be re-activated by some injectable treatments.  It may be necessary to take a prescribed anti-viral medication.
  • If you suffer any allergic responses, prolonged generalized symptoms, discomfort, discoloration or any lumps/unevenness that persists after 5-7 days, please call the office at (859) 266-5483, or 859-266-0117 (after-hours) if you have any questions or concerns. IMPORTANT NOTE: In treatments for wrinkles and deep scar tissue there is a small risk that the dermal filler will press on small blood vessels causing a reduced circulation of blood to the skin. This can lead to tissue damage and possibly scarring. If you experience prolonged pain in the area injected and/or a change in skin color (paleness, white or dusky grey discoloration as opposed to the purplish/red color of a bruise) within 24 hours after your treatment, please contact your cosmetic practitioner immediately for advice at (859) 266-5483, or 859-266-0117 (after-hours).
