What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP is produced from a person’s own blood. It is a concentration of one type of cell, known as platelets, which circulate through the blood and are critical for blood clotting. Platelets and the liquid plasma portion of the blood contain many factors that are essential for the cell recruitment, multiplication and specialization that are required for healing.

After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which is a tool that separates the blood into its many components.

  • Blood= 3 components (red cells, white cells, and platelets.)
  • Platelets contain hundreds of growth factors which are proteins important in the healing of injuries.
  • This process concentrates down the PRP with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood (it makes it 3-5, even 10x richer)

How does PRP work?

  • A simple blood draw is all that is needed to prepare the PRP!
  • Your blood is placed into a centrifuge and spun at a very rapid rate.  The spin separates the platelets from other components of the blood, which activates the platelet-rich plasma.
  • The PRP is then massaged into the channels of your skin to facilitate your treatment.
