Botox 101: What is Botox?

I’ve Heard of Botox

Of course you’ve heard of BOTOX® Cosmetic. You’ve seen Botox advertisements in People, the New Yorker, Vogue, and In Style. You’ve seen celebrity spokespersons, such as Virginia Madsen and Vanessa Williams, endorse the brand. Newsweek published a landmark article entitled “The Botox Boom” and referred to it as “the miracle drug for Boomers.” Similarly, an article in Time said Botox was a “facelift in a bottle…a true miracle drug.” The word is out and that word is Botox.

Everyone’s Doing Botox

In 2014, there were nearly 13.9 million nonsurgical procedures performed in America. Of these procedures, a large portion were Botox. In 2016, about 7 million people got Botox injections, according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. For many people, Botox is part of their normal routine. They’ll get their hair highlighted, manicures for their hands, and Botox for their face. Botox is on the basic grooming checklist.

But What is Botox?

Botox became so popular, so fast that you may be embarrassed to ask questions about it. Thus, we’re going to start with the most basic question: What is Botox?

Botox:

  • is a purified form of botulinum toxin A, which is a protein that occurs in nature.
  • was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 for the cosmetic reduction of forehead lines.
  • is a neurotoxin, meaning that it affects the nerve impulses that control the muscles.
  • works by relaxing the underlying muscles where it is injected, thus reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
